Friends of the Teton River will use these funds to improve fish passage and water delivery at an existing fish ladder at the Trail Creek Sprinkler diversion. The current system has not effectively functioned to pass fish. A new ladder will open upstream connectivity and passage for native Yellow Stone Cutthroat Trout to 8 miles of spawning and rearing habitat in Trail, Moose, and Mike Harris Creeks. Restoring passage at this point of diversion will increase YCT population in Trail Creek (WY/ID) and in the Upper Teton River, while also creating a win-win for irrigators who want to meet the needs of their shareholders and the native trout fishery.

The Market Lake Wildlife Management Area recently acquired new property that includes a small pond. The pond is used both by migrating waterfowl and as a nesting area. The area around the pond was previously heavily grazed by livestock and is being restored with vegetation planting to a more suitable habitat. The area includes a public information and viewing blind. To support both the habitat restoration and improve the viewing landscape, two floating islands will be installed. The islands will provide protected nesting and loafing sites for waterfowl and enhance the viewing opportunity for the public. The Upper Snake Chapter of the Idaho Master Naturalists will work with the Market Lake WMA Idaho Fish and Game personnel to complete and maintain the project.

This project will restore valuable Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout (YCT) spawning and rearing habitat, water quality, and function in a headwaters section of the Teton River and Hatchery Creek (a small spring creek) which have been heavily impacted by cattle. Historic overgrazing of this property caused the loss of riparian vegetation resulting in the instability and widening of the stream channels, loss of quality fish habitat ant water quality impairments. The over-widened channels are unable to transport sediment loads and are currently silted in many locations, limiting YCT access to spawning gravels. FTR is partnering with the landowner to design and implement restoration treatments along 3,070 linear feet of stream banks and channel on the Teton River and 1,830 linear feet of Hatchery Creek, using bioengineering techniques. Livestock grazing will be managed and cattle will be kept off restored areas by installing 1,870 feet of exclusion fencing and an off-site gravity-fed stock water supply system.

This project builds on the previously IFWF funded Teton Creek Corridor Restoration and Enhancement Project by developing signage that will educate the public about the habitat protection and restoration of critical areas within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Signage will contain information about the winter range habitat and winter closures, as well as detailed information about the goals of the Teton Creek Corridor Project which include creek and riparian restoration, upland habitat restoration, and the protection of open space and farmland.
