The Wood Duck HOA and IDFG co-manage this area and have developed a 5-year management plan that includes invasive species removal followed by native plant installation over a 3-year period.

This project helps support the completion of the final phase of construction for the SWS Flight Barn. The Flight Barn facility is 20′ X 50′ pole-barn structure, used for flight testing, housing and rehabilitating injured and/or orphaned birds of prey (falcons, hawks, owls, and eagles). The structure consists of 2 bays, each approximately 10′ wide X 50′ long. One bay will be used for flight testing birds, which is important for getting birds’ muscles strong after a long period of immobility so they can fly successfully when released back to the wild. The internal height of this bay will be 12 feet. The second bay will house (in individual enclosures called “mews”) recuperating birds and SWS resident educational birds of prey. This bay will have an internal height of 8-12 feet.

Improved field irrigations, such as pivots, efficiently conserve irrigation water and improve water quality. The practice does however have negative consequences on habitat. Smaller irrigation parcels and irrigation ditches are removed to form one large circular field. The ditches and fence lines that once provided nesting cover are removed The corners of the pivots (approximately 10-12 acres on a half pivot), which are often not irrigated, are left as unusable space that is tilled and left fallow or grow weeds often unusable by upland birds.

This grant awarded Snake River Quail Forever to plant wildlife-friendly plants to pivot corners to establish high-quality nesting, breed rearing, and pollinator habitat. Quail Forever and Pheasants Forever are dedicated to passing on a land ethic and our outdoor heritage to the next generation. Youth interested in hunting and shooting sports can lead to a lifetime of outdoor appreciation and conservation support. The Snake River Quail Forever chapter has developed a ranking system to approve habitat projects that prioritize hunting opportunities to the public and youth on private and public lands.

For the past 25 years Idaho Department of Fish and Game has maintained approximately fifteen wildlife education trunks that are used by teachers in the Treasure Valley, boy & girl scouts, Nature Centers & Discovery Centers and more to enhance lessons on particular species, subjects and topics. The trunks are in dire need of upgrading with new formats of videos, books and other materials. The storage containers are beat up and some of the biology aspects (hides, antlers, skeletons etc.) also need attention. There is also a need for a track cast trunk which would be highly utilized. The wildlife trunks fill a void for hundreds of students a year whose schools can no longer go on field trips. Even for those who do go on field trips, they are the perfect addition.

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game has been capturing and collaring elk in Owyhee County to determine elk utilization of public vs private land to address depredation concerns and improve hunting opportunity for tag holders. The elk location data allows IDFG to determine preferred habitat types, and potentially identify habitat improvement projects on public land that benefits elk. This funding will help provide funding to help cover helicopter capture costs for the final stages of this project.
