The Idaho Fish and Game was awarded funding to help complete the third phase (final phase) of the Blackfoot River Wildlife Management Area (WMA) Fisheries Habitat Restoration Project. The WMA has suffered extensive damage due to past land practices, yet still supports a quality Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout population and recreational fishery. The restoration along six miles of Blackfoot River contained within the WMA will result in a 400% increase in the YCT population in this area, and increase angler use and satisfaction of this unique resource. The Blackfoot River WMA is owned and managed by IDFG and provides a valuable resource to the citizens of Southeast Idaho: it supports the mission of IDFG by providing wildlife based recreation including fishing, hunting, trapping, wildlife viewing, photography, and (as a result of collaboration between the local grazing association and IDFG) an area to demonstrate how controlled grazing can benefit fish and wildlife resources.

This habitat restoration project is comprised of two separate project areas: the west fork and the south fork of Mink Creek. It is a popular recreational destination for hikers, upland and big game sportsmen and campers. Both tributaries provide important habitat to an array of Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) in Idaho and habitat resources for game species including mule deer, moose, elk and ruffed grouse. In addition, both the west fork and south fork of Mink Creek provide critical habitat for Yellowstone cutthroat trout. A combination of beaver dam analogs, post-assisted log structures, beaver translocation and willow plantings will be used to accomplish the goals of the project. The project goals are to: (1) repair major stream incision, (2) improve habitat for SGCN, big game, upland game, and Yellowstone cutthroat trout, (3) recharge ground water, and (4) prolong the period at which surface water is available.

Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust’s newest fee title property, known as Centry Heights Preserve lies within Pocatello city limits, is adjacent to public land management by the Bureau of Land Management, and contains 166 acres of sagebrush steppe habitat that contributes and buffers the Black Rock Winter Range complex. The Land Trust recently completed the management plan for the Preserve which priortized protection and enhancement of winter range for mule deer, seasonal access for public use, wildland fire mitigation, and research. Non-motorized access will be allowed during April to November when deer are not on winter range. This project will enhance recreational opportunity and improve user knowledge of the area using a kiosk station to display maps, rules, information about sagebrush steppe habitat, and the importance of the Black Rock winter range to mule deer in the Southeast Region.

The need for restoration on the Blackfoot River Wildlife Management Area (WMA) arises from past land use practices: namely over grazing by cattle and sheep. Because of these past land use practices, spawning and rearing habitat for Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout (YCT) has been greatly diminished. Upon completion, there should be a a two to four times increase in carrying capacity for YCT on the WMA.
