The Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute provides a 26.2 acre nature preserve in the town of Moscow, Idaho, to community members and local wildlife alike. These wetlands provide stopover habitat to migrating birds, cover and resources to other species, and improve water quality in the area. These funds will support the planting of 943 additional native trees, shrubs, and forbs to improve water filtration, increase cover, and provide shade.

This project is designed to implement the US national R3 program in the state of Idaho. This grant allows First Hunt Foundation (FHF) to assist the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) in keeping the hunting heritage alive by recruiting new hunters, retaining the current hunters, and by reactivating hunters who no longer hunt. Metrics of success will be the addition of 70 new volunteer mentors, the establishment of 2-4 new organized chapters of FHF, the establishment of 4-6 new hunter training events per year, and access to many thousands of private land acres for training new hunters. Overall success will be the established relationship/partnership between FHF and IDFG’s Region 3 Coordinator which in the long run helps Idaho youth and new hunters.

The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest Aspen Restoration (NPCNF) project will address shared inter-agency goals by restoring and increasing the size of known aspen stands to trend vegetation toward the natural range of variation and the NPCNF target objectives (at least 40,000 acres of aspen, as outlined in the Forest Plans) while improving fish and wildlife habitat. The intent of this project specifically is to increase and restore critical habitat and forage for species of economic and recreational importance (elk, moose, deer, grouse).

The project will revive an existing and historic trail that runs mid-elevation around the WMA that has nearly been forgotten. Almost the entire trail system is closed to motorized use, providing a unique opportunity for sportsmen to access a remote part of the WMA. Most of the trail tread along the Snake River side of the WMA has degraded and is no longer suitable for horse or foot travel. Therefore, the grant will enable the Department to map, improve trail conditions, improve camp sites, connect public cabins and create a trail network totaling over 120 miles in length once complete! Completion of this project will greatly enhance sportsmen access to hunt chukar, big game and enjoy numerous wildlife and vista views within rugged Hells Canyon.

The 1,800 square mile area is heavily used by hunters and anglers. The cabin provides a place for construction officers during patrols of this isolated area, increasing enforcement presence and the ability to cover more territory.

The Foundation provided a grant to the Idaho County Board of Commissioners to replace an undersized and breeched culvert on Squaw Creek to help steelhead trout and spring run Chinook to access more than 3.5 miles of spawning and early-rearing habitat. Additional work improved the habitat by flattening the Squaw Creek channel slope, installing riprap scour protection, reshaping the Papoose Creek channel, and replacing all trees removed during construction. Partners included Idaho Pacific Coast Salmon Recovery Fund; the NOAA Fisheries Community-based Restoration Program; Idaho County Roads Department; Idaho Department of Fish and Game and Idaho Soil Conservation Commission.
